The Flora of Alaska project includes staff at the University of Alaska, both in Fairbanks and Anchorage; representatives of Alaska, U.S. Federal, and neighboring Yukon land management and natural resource agencies; and the public. The project is guided by an Executive Committee. The ALA Herbarium at University of Alaska Museum recently received a major National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop the informatics infrastructure for the new flora. However, we need additional funding to support the large work of determining accepted names, creating and updating descriptive materials, and developing accessible outputs.
We have identified a number of elements that need funding for the successful completion of the Flora of Alaska: (1) salary support for a practicing taxonomist with knowledge of a majority of the taxa that occur in Alaska; (2) compensation for the generation of additional descriptive materials by Alaskan and external expert botanists, to include travel fellowships to the ALA Herbarium as necessary; (3) support for an illustrator; (4) coverage of printing costs for University of Alaska Press. Royalty returns on a book version of the Flora will be negotiated at 10% to support the long-term maintenance of the Flora project.
